Women and Advertisements

Feb 1 2012

Women are negatively influenced by advertisements-

With each individual being subjected to an average of 1000 ads in a fortnight it is not difficult to assume that some of these hard-hitting selling campaigns do have an effect on the emotions or sensibilities of the viewer. Any young teenage girl browsing at a newsagent may well believe that she is completely in charge of her responses and in control of the decisions she will make with regard to a product or magazine. WRONG! Psychologists who have studied the messages sent by advertisements have found that many of the images over time influence the viewer or the reader in a subliminal way. I will now explain how this occurs.

Take our teenage girl “just looking” at the glossy magazines with pictures of perfectly tanned, tuned and sized models showing the latest expensive fashions or visiting the plush holiday resorts. She may not believe she is being manipulated but she is in fact drawn into feeling envious or jealous of the model in some way; and by feeling this she automatically adopts a negative attitude towards herself. What she wants is an instant ‘fix’ to be beautiful and successful- this being judged completely on her appearance and in the same way judges herself to be less than acceptable.

This thought is compounded by our society demanding that women spend a great deal of money on cosmetics, clothes and exercise programmes to keep the body beautiful. “Plain” Janes are often ignored completely- from the school yard when selecting teams to employment opportunities in the workforce- merely because they don’t fit the image! I’d like to suggest to you that this is totally unfair. If a woman is a top ten model with exquisite looks does this mean she is more intelligent than her counterpart?

Marijuana: Menace or Medicine?

Dec 14 2011

Throughout human history, since 15th century BC in China, Cannabis Sativa has been used throughout nearly every culture as a relaxant, an aphrodisiac, but first and foremost, a medicine. Its first use was for the treatment of diseases such as rheumatism, gout, malaria, and, ironically, absent-mindedness. In India, the drug was used more recreationally, and in the Muslim world its wide use is a result of the Koran’s minimal mention of Cannabis, in contrast to it’s strict prohibition of alcohol consumption. This popularity eventually influenced the spread of the drug to Persia and made its way to western culture in North Africa. Marijuana became known throughout the world as one of the most interesting, medicinally valuable, and least harmful psychoactive drugs. In 1975, the federal government reported that “Cannabis is one of the most ancient healing drugs.” * It’s historical use as a medicine covers a broad spectrum of diseases, including anorexia, asthma, nausea, pain, peptic ulcers, alcoholism, glaucoma, epilepsy, depression, Migraine, anxiety, inflammation, hypertension, insomnia, and cancer. Different uses have originated from different cultures. As mentioned earlier, marijuana was most likely used to treat anxiety, or absent-mindedness, in China, while today in the United Stated it has been widely researched and recommended for glaucoma and nausea. But a serious problem exists in our nation: an attitude of blind hypocrisy. Marijuana is classified as a Schedule I narcotic (and interestingly enough the technical definition of a narcotic is an opiate-based depressant drug, which marijuana is unarguably not), meaning that it has a high potential for abuse with no accepted medicinal value. Access to the drug is intended for research only, and it is stored in a secure vault. Note that this category is the same category that historically dangerous and addictive drugs such as Phencyclidine (PCP) and Heroin.

Gay Marriage

Jul 13 2011

Ask just about anyone. They'll all tell you they're in favor of equal rights for homosexuals. Just name the situation, and ask. They'll all say, yes, gays should have the same rights in housing, jobs, public accommodations, and should have equal access to government benefits, equal protection of the law, etcetera. Then you get to gay marriage. In this paper I will be talking about the pros and cons of why gay people should be married. I will introduce Aristotle’s idea of virtue ethics and his theory of flourishing. I will also mention Bentham’s is/ought fallacy and his principle of utility. I will briefly talk about Mills idea on Competent Judges. In this paper I may not come a conclusion as to whether a gay person should be married or not, but it will give you a better understanding on the ethics behind the topic.

In opposition of gay marriage you look at the theory of Aristotle’s idea of virtue, what are the characteristics that allow humans to perform their function well? Well if procreation is a characteristic that humans need to do, then that can not happen in a gay marriage. If you are female, it’s the males’ duty to procreate with a female and vise versa, a women’s duty is to have children, that’s what they are made for. If they are not living life like everyone else then they can not go through life doing what they were suppose to do, in regards to everyday living and discrimination, how can they cope with everyday life? This also falls into the Is/Ought fallacy, where just because a person is gay does not mean that that person ought to act upon that and marry as a gay. They can just as easily marry the opposite sex and lead a normal life. The third theory that backs up the idea that gays should not marry is the principle of utility, by maximizing the happiness of everyone. For most people, heterosexual relationships are the norm, both in society and in nature. Homosexual relationships are therefore abnormal and unnatural.

Susan B. Anthony

Jun 20 2011

In the nineteenth century women did not possess all the rights of citizenship, and the law viewed them as merely an extension of their father or husband. Many women could not own land, and no woman could vote or run for public office. Various women tried to project themselves out there in society and take a stand for their rights, but never succeeded. There was one extraordinary woman, however, who that stood out from the rest of the women who had failed; Her name was Susan B. Anthony. Anthony had many strengths in her personality that led people to think that she could really make a difference for women. Everyone around her knew she would grow to be a strong lady, but they never knew she would grow up to be known for activating women’s rights.

As many people may know, Susan B. Anthony had a very significant life that is very important not only to United States women, but to all United States citizens. Anthony did not grow up into a mature young lady and all of the sudden decide to be a women’s activist. There were many pieces and parts in her life that helped her achieve her goal of women’s rights and safeness in society (Sheridan 199). Anthony’s childhood experiences prepared her for her adult life. There were many significant events in Susan B. Anthony’s life that led her to help achieve women’s rights.

Child Labor

Jun 20 2011

Earlier in the month, I went to Joe’s shoe factory. I went there to see how safe the factory is. I also went there to see child labor going on, and how they treated the children. Another reason I went there was to see how the factory ran, and every thing else.

When I first walked in, I saw that the entire factory was just women and children. There was only one or two men making sure the others were doing there job. The women and girls were mostly wearing dresses. The small boys were wearing pants and a t-shirt. None of them had shoes on. I asked one of the children how much they were being paid and he about five cents a day. I interviewed one of the women about her job. This what she said

“I get paid about 10 cents every day. My two children work here also. My job is to sew the top of the shoes to the soles. I work every day except we get off work early on Sundays to go to church. I work from 6:00 A.M. until about 7:00 P.M. That is also the same with my children.”

Next, I looked at the work conditions of the factory. It was not good. There was needles and pins on the floor. The women and children were not wearing any shoes. There were machines with big needles that the children had to get working again. When anyone would get hurt, they would be fired if there injury was too serious. They was no medical help in the factory. The women’s dresses could have been caught in the machines.

That is how the factory was and I didn’t like it. They really need to change there ways. I hope that the law does something about child labor. I am glad that I never had to work in a factory. I feel bad for the employees.

That is my report from Joe’s Shoe Factory!

Grass Roots of America

Nov 14 2010

The National Rifle Association (NRA) is an organization which is based around the second amendment, the right to bear arms. Through television, radio, internet, etc., the NRA utilizes several types of media to gather and maintain members. In an effort to form a militia which could keep the United States Government in check, the NRA was formed in New York, 1871. The association and its initial members thought that if the government confiscated all the country’s weapons, then they would have too much power over the people.

Women and Society

Nov 14 2010

In the 17th and 18th centuries, women were said to be imaginary in society. Women were seen physically, but not heard out loud. Being invisible was considered normal to women. They had little freedom, no voice, and certainly no rights. As times changed throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, women became more and more involved with political, economic, and social aspects in society. Rights and opportunities of women have improved and are still continuing to improve today.

Persuasive Essay

Nov 14 2010

Do you know of any woman who does everything around the house from cooking to cleaning, and still manages to take care of her kids and keep a steady job? This can be overwhelming for one person, which is why I believe the man of the house should help out. Back in the early years women were the backbone of the household. If dinner needed to be cooked or the laundry needed to be cleaned, the women did it. This was considered okay “back then” since the men worked all day in the field and brought home the things necessary for an adequate lifestyle. Things have changed over the course of years.

Active Euthanasia vs Passive Euthanasia

Nov 14 2010

In modern society medical treatment has come a long way. Doctors now have the equipment and drugs available to them that can cure many different types of illness, or at least reduce the severity of the illness, for example by using painkillers to reduce the pain of an illness. Doctors also have the ability to keep people alive when otherwise they would have died, by using ventilators etc. While these people may be able to continue to live, they may have to do so in a great amount of pain. This raises the question of euthanasia, of which there is two types, active and passive.
