On the continent of Europe surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, North Sea, English Channel, and south east of Ireland rests London, England; the home of the Englishman. The English as a people were created from a different mold than that of the rest of the world. The English respond differently to situations, and they go about life in a different manner. The famous writer E.M. Forster wrote an interesting essay entitled “Notes on the English Character,” and in this essay he portrays the way in which the English go about living their lives. In his essay he tries to enlighten his readers on the truth about the English. His observations can also be seen through literature and motion pictures. In the Book Brave New World and the motion picture Gandhi the English are portrayed as rude and undesirable. Therefore Forster’s “Notes on the English Character” makes evident their unsympathetic, reserved, and cautious behavior, and this is present in both Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World and the motion picture Gandhi.
The English Chill
American Poetry
Although when writers T.S. Elliot, Edwin Arlington Robinson, and Andrew Marvell wrote their respective poems society was noticeably different from what it is today, their themes of indecision, loneliness, carpe diem, spiritual emptiness, joy of living, are still reflected in today’s society. Themes, such as loneliness and indecision which Elliot conveys in his “The Love Song of J Alfred Prufrock,” spiritual emptiness expressed in both of Robinson’s poems titled “Richard Cory” and “Miniver Cheevy,” and that of carpe diem seen in Marvell’s “To His Coy Mistress” are feelings that people experience to this date. In Elliot’s poem, the main character J.Alfred Prufrock is experiencing a mid-life crisis filled with the indecision, loneliness and insecurities that closely resemble the troubles of teenage angst.. Both of Robinson’s poems carry a theme of spiritual emptiness which is exemplified in today’s society’s by celebrities, people we consider icons. Marvell’s theme of carpe diem or seize the day is one that can be seen today at every turn in this day and age.
T.S. Elliot used a bachelor in his mid-life crisis name J. Alfred Prufrock to express the themes of loneliness and indecision. In the poem, Prufrock ask himself “And indeed there will be time to wonder Do I dare? and Do I dare?” as does any teenager when confronted with any decision. Proufrock questioned such simple tasks as eating a peach, although I can’t relate to this, indecision is something that haunts everyone. From wondering what to wear in the morning to revealing your deepest secrets, Prufrock’s life
is full of indecision. As I have seen within my quest for college, and on my journey to discover who I’ll ultimately be as an adult, indecision haunts me, as it haunts Prufrock.
From Hills to High Rises
As people grow up, they become accustomed to their every day run of life. That is until moving day comes. Moving from a small country hamlet like Neerlandia to the big city of Edmonton may cause people to notice differences like the scenery, and the availability, or lack there of, of bare essentials. When moving from the county to a city the changes are drastic.
There are many people who live in the country and take its vast beauty for granted. No matter where a person goes in Canada, there are beautiful country sides to gaze upon: the rolling hills, the beautiful crops and the trees that are constantly progressing from buds in spring to an array of colors in fall. The small hamlet of Neerlandia consists of less than 30 houses, but the community spans across an area roughly equivalent to the size of Edmonton. There are no barriers and only fields and forests as far as you can see. These fields from seeding time in the spring to harvest in the fall give weekly changes in scenery. Wild deer run rampant across the area along with other animals such as moose, lynx, coyotes, and wolves. These animals, along with many different types of birds, add an extra little touch to the country side scene. The country is bursting at the seams with space and colors making it an awesome place to relax and just take it all in.
James Baldwin
Intelligence, honesty and a mass of dignity, James Baldwin a Negro essayist and novelist shocked the world with his many novels which openly denounced the racial patterns in America. He is described as a moralist who critics say speaks with grace but with frequent force. Baldwin’s most valuable quality is authenticity. John Rees Moore says, “Baldwin writes with honesty, but with anger. He puts all his skills and intelligence to making sure that the shock and pain of this meaning will not be lost on the reader”. He says, “my people are lonely, frustrated, fearful and angry and I intend to let the world hear their voices”. He is one of the most brilliant writers in America and his essays continue to be read today. Because of his brilliance, eloquence, honesty, courage and intelligence he is considered a spokes person for blacks. Baldwin says, “I am a witness to what I have seen and the possibilities that I think I see” (Weatherby p.2). This study will show that Baldwin’s works are honest and challenging descriptions of his life experiences.
James Baldwin is unquestionably one of the most brilliant young writers in America. Mad reality confronts all writers today, but it is possibly even more maddening for Baldwin, a Negro, who, because of his brilliance, his eloquence, his honesty, his courage, his superb intelligence, has become a spokesman, in a sense a captive spokesman, for his people (CLC Vol. 1:31).
MacBeth
Macbeth, by William Shakespeare is one of the most popular pieces of literature Shakespeare has ever written. His images and themes correspond to create a story of both suspense and excitement. Macbeth, the leading character of the novel, goes through a complete transformation from good to evil. His ambition and desire for power causes himself to become inhumane, which is portrayed through many images in the play. Shakespeare uses blood, violence, darkness, and the supernatural to represent Macbeth’s new disrupted heart caused by his crave for advancing in the chain of being.
Sleep
It’s true that teens don’t get enough sleep, but changing the school starting times would have a chaotic effect and throw everyone off balance. Scientists have shown that teens are more active later at night than children and adults; so most teens are probably staying up later for whatever reasons. “The researchers measured the presence of the sleep-promoting hormone melatonin in teenagers’ saliva at different time of the day.
