Clive Staples Lewis was born on November 29, 1898, in Belfast Ireland. His father name was Albert Lewis, and his mothers name was Florence Hamilton Lewis. He had one older brother. Lewis had a fairly good relationship with his parents, but was never exceedingly close or far away. During Lewis’s childhood, his brother was his best friend. They often found comfort in each other, which only made their relationship become stronger. He grew up in an upper-middle class family, and was raised in Belfast, Ireland. Having a large house, he took to the attic, where he brought his imagination to reality. He created imaginary worlds such as Boxen and Animal Land. He and his family were relatively happy until the death of his mother in 1908. The happy atmosphere of Lewis’s house seemed to die along with his mother. It affected his father’s attitude and behavior dramatically. After this it he was old enough to return with his brother to a British Public Boarding School, who had been previously attending there. This school was extremely strict, as well as its Headmaster. This boarding school did not provide a very good education. He did not like this school very much, but his grades were never low as a result of his dislike. Lewis was shipped around to a few other boarding school during his childhood. In 1914, Lewis was sent to one of his father’s old teachers. He spent two happy years, learning different languages, as well as literature that provided the basis for his future career. His going to college was delayed because of his enlistment in the army. While enlisted, he met Joy Davidman Greshman. They were together for thirty years. In January 1919, Lewis entered Oxford University, where he read classical philosophy, history, and literature for three years, and spent an additional year studying English literature. He then spent thirty years as a tutor in English for Magdalen College, Oxford. He established many good friendships there including those with J.R.R.
